{"id":125,"date":"2018-03-16T16:05:42","date_gmt":"2018-03-16T16:05:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/ramona.ulfdittmer.com\/?p=125"},"modified":"2018-03-16T16:05:42","modified_gmt":"2018-03-16T16:05:42","slug":"beating-about-bushes-to-fish-for-information","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ramona.ulfdittmer.com\/?p=125","title":{"rendered":"Beating about bushes to fish for information"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>To continue my exploration of German and English idioms and their translations, I have chosen an idiom that exists in similar form in both languages:<\/p>\n<p><strong>auf den Busch klopfen<\/strong> (literally: to beat on the bush)<\/p>\n<p>It is no doubt tempting to translate it with the English idiom &#8220;<strong>to beat around\/about the bushes<\/strong>,&#8221; but its meaning corresponds to a completely different English idiom: <strong>fishing for information.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-128\" src=\"http:\/\/ramona.ulfdittmer.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/03\/Busch-278x300.png\" alt=\"Beating about the bushes and German translation\" width=\"181\" height=\"195\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The origin of both \u201cauf den Busch klopfen\u201d and \u201cto beat around the bushes\u201d is the same and can be traced back to hunting. Before the actual hunt started, assistants were sent out to beat around the bushes to scare out any animals and birds hiding in there. But the surviving metaphorical meanings went into two different directions: The German expression emphasizes the beating\u2019s function of finding out whether there is any game hiding in the bushes. The English expression points to the beating as a preparatory action. It was a lot of to-do before the main event, the hunt, started.
